Shane Steichen Avoids Committing on Anthony Richardson’s Future

Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson spent two weeks away from the team while seeking a trade, but he returned for voluntary workouts Monday, though his future remains unclear. Richardson is currently recovering from a right eye injury.

On Friday, head coach Shane Steichen addressed the situation briefly without offering much clarity.

“He’s back in the fold right now. That part’s been good,” Steichen said, via James Boyd of TheAthletic.com. “He’s working, going through his fundamentals, details, out there throwing with the guys. And that’s where it’s at right now.”

Richardson, drafted fourth overall in 2023, lost his starting role to Daniel Jones last season. According to Boyd, he still wants to be traded but is approaching the situation professionally.

When asked whether Richardson would compete with 2025 sixth-round pick Riley Leonard for the backup job behind Jones, Steichen sidestepped.

“Right now, we’re in May. We’ll see how it goes, obviously, with all that,” Steichen said. “But [Richardson’s] working. He’s here. He’s in good spirits. He’s cleared to play with the vision stuff, so that part’s good.”

Richardson suffered a freak pregame accident on Oct. 12 that fractured the orbital bone around his eye.
