According to Lakers beat reporter Dave McMenamin, LeBron James is definitely set to continue playing in the NBA, but his next team is not necessarily the Los Angeles Lakers.
McMenamin noted that it became clear after the All-Star break that James will stay on the court, but his future in Los Angeles is in doubt. As many as five or six teams could be realistic landing spots for him next season. If the Lakers are swept in the current playoff series, the front office will have to convince James that a solid rebuilding plan is in place and that he can return to chase another championship. At this stage of his career, the ability to contend for a title is the deciding factor in all of his decisions.

The Lakers’ current performance has drawn sharp criticism. Analyst Pormanoy blasted the media for overhyping the Lakers’ first-round victory over the Houston Rockets. He argued that the Rockets were far from a strong team, plagued by internal issues and limited by Kevin Durant’s injuries. The Lakers won that series 4-2, but that created an illusion of depth.
Now facing the top-seeded and defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder, the Lakers are down 0-3 and look overwhelmed. The Lakers are scoring only about 101 points per game, while the Thunder are averaging over 121 points. Even with Luka Dončić sidelined by injury, the Lakers can’t keep up with the Thunder’s pace.
James received widespread praise after the first round, averaging 23.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 8.3 assists, setting records as the oldest player to achieve certain double-doubles in the playoffs. However, against the Thunder’s young and athletic squad, the Lakers’ age and lack of intensity over 48 minutes have been exposed.
After losing Game 3, Lakers head coach JJ Redick admitted the team had tried every possible adjustment, including changing lineups and defensive matchups. James himself acknowledged the Thunder’s championship-level quality and conceded that his team’s effort and intensity were simply not up to par.
With the Lakers on the brink of a sweep in Game 4, the franchise is at a crossroads. James’ next move will shape the team’s future, and his priority remains clear: joining a contender capable of winning a title.
