Liverpool stumbled to a 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Anfield, marking the ninth time this Premier League season they have dropped points from a leading position at home—their worst record in nine years.
The Reds took the lead after just six minutes, much to the delight of the home crowd, who anticipated an easy victory against an opponent winless in 66 days. However, Liverpool failed to build momentum, managing an expected goals (xG) of just 0.51—the lowest at home since March 2021. By the final whistle, boos echoed around the stadium.
The turning point came in the 67th minute, when manager Arne Slot substituted 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha. The decision has since sparked debate. While the move may have been intended to protect the youngster, Liverpool failed to create any meaningful chances after his departure. The team’s attack became sluggish and lacked penetration, allowing Chelsea to escape with a point.
With this result, Liverpool have now dropped nine points from winning positions at home this season—a tally not seen since the 2015-16 campaign, when they ended with 14 such points. For a team with title aspirations, such poor home form is a serious concern.
