Iran Seizes Properties of Ex-National Football Captain Ali Karimi

Posted on: 05/13/2026

Iranian authorities have announced the confiscation of real estate linked to former national team footballer Ali Karimi. According to reports, judicial bodies have seized six properties—two commercial units and four residential properties.

In a statement from Mizan, an agency affiliated with Iran’s judicial system, Karimi was labeled a “traitor to the homeland” for actively supporting “enemy forces” in recent years. The former footballer has not yet publicly commented on the authorities’ decision.

During his career, Karimi played for Bayern Munich and earned the nickname “Asian Maradona.” After moving abroad, he repeatedly supported protests against the Iranian government and advocated for the monarchy overthrown after the Islamic Revolution.

In 2022, Iranian authorities charged Karimi in absentia for backing the protests that erupted following the death of Mahsa Amini, who was detained by the morality police.

Currently, Iran’s men’s national team is preparing for the World Cup in the United States. Amid ongoing tensions between Iran, Israel, and the United States, the team remains under heightened scrutiny.
